After moving to the Netherlands, Anita advises daily short drills, mini role-plays with neighbors, and using simple phrases like goed and dag to boost everyday speaking confidence.
The biggest problem with learning Dutch after your move isn’t the grammar, you know.
It's that people here switch to English so quickly.
How do you keep talking in Dutch then? Well, without it getting awkward?
Yes, and did you know that quite a few newcomers still barely dare to speak after six months?
They nod and smile, but they speak little.
Such a shame, because you learn by talking and making mistakes.
0:31Welkom trouwens. Leuk dat je luistert.
Welcome, by the way. Nice to have you listening.
I’m Henk, and I’ve been living in the Netherlands for years, but I often help friends who just got here.
Today, we’re just going to talk practically about how to start learning Dutch after your move.
0:46En ik ben Anita.
And I'm Anita.
I sometimes teach language classes in the area, very informally, at the library.
So yes, we have some tips and also a few funny blunders, haha.
1:00Laten we meteen met iets handigs beginnen.
Let’s start with something handy.
If someone switches to English, just say: Can I try it in Dutch?
1:08Dat is vriendelijk, maar wel duidelijk.
That’s friendly, but clear.
1:12Je laat zien: ik wil oefenen, help me even.
You show: I want to practice, help me out.
I often add: I'm still learning, could you speak a bit slower?
1:22Dat werkt echt goed.
That really works well.
People are usually patient then, and they speak more calmly, quite sweet often.
1:29Zullen we een mini-rollenspel doen, gewoon meteen?
Shall we do a mini role-play, just right away?
You’re the barista. I’m the new neighbor who wants to practice Dutch.
And uh, you switch to English to make it exciting, okay?
Alright, I'll pretend I’m behind the bar.
1:47Ik zeg: goedemorgen.
I say: good morning.
1:50Wat wil je drinken?
What would you like to drink?
1:52En dan zeg ik snel in het Engels: or do you prefer English?
And then I quickly say in English: or do you prefer English?
I then respond: uh, can I try it in Dutch?
2:01Ik ben nog aan het leren.
I’m still learning.
2:03En dan: een cappuccino, alsjeblieft.
And then: a cappuccino, please.
2:06Rustig en met een glimlach, hè?
Calmly and with a smile, right?
2:10Dan zeg ik: tuurlijk.
Then I say: sure.
2:13Een cappuccino.
A cappuccino.
2:15Wil je cacao erop?
Would you like chocolate on top?
I talk just a bit slower and I look friendly.
2:22Zo simpel is het vaak.
It’s often that simple.
2:25Ik, ja graag, met cacao.
Yes, please, with chocolate.
2:28En kan ik pinnen?
And can I pay by card?
And you might also say how much it costs, right?
2:33Ja, ik zeg: dat is drie euro vijftig.
Yes, I say: that's three euros fifty.
2:39Pinnen mag.
Paying by card is fine.
2:40Kijk, klaar.
Look, done.
You just practiced two sentences immediately and got your drink too.
2:47Zie je wel, dat is niet eng.
See, that's not scary.
And if someone still keeps speaking in English, just kindly repeat.
2:53Ik oefen Nederlands.
I’m practicing Dutch.
2:54Vindt u het oké als ik Nederlands praat?
Do you mind if I speak Dutch?
2:57Dat is beleefd en duidelijk.
That’s polite and clear.
Speaking of practicing, there’s one more tip that people often forget.
3:05Kinderboeken en kinderprogramma's, ja echt.
Children’s books and children’s programs, yes really.
They're short, clear, and the sentences aren't too hard.
3:14Je leert gewoon lekker snel nieuwe woorden.
You just learn new words quickly.
3:16Ik hoor dat zo vaak.
I hear that so often.
3:19Had ik maar eerder met kinderboeken begonnen.
I wish I had started with children's books earlier.
You have nice series with subtitles and songs that stick in your head.
3:27Het voelt soms kinderachtig, maar het werkt.
It feels a bit childish sometimes, but it works.
Another thing that many beginners find tricky: the G sound.
3:36Die komt uit je keel, een beetje achterin.
It comes from your throat, a bit in the back.
Not a K and not an H, but something in between, like you're gently clearing your throat.
Yes, practice with words like good, big, gray, and also day.
3:53Zeg het langzaam: G-g goed, G-g grijs.
Say it slowly: G-g good, G-g gray.
It might feel weird, but after a week it already sounds better, really.
4:01Ja, dat gebeurt gewoon.
Yes, that just happens.
Pregnant is when you're having a baby, and a mute is someone who says little.
Big differences, but hey, everyone understands you're learning.
4:35En het wordt daarna juist een leuk verhaal.
And afterwards, it actually becomes a fun story.
4:38Oké, nog iets praktisch.
Okay, something practical.
In many cities, you have a language house or the library with free language groups.
Sometimes there's also a language buddy, which is a volunteer who talks with you one-on-one.
4:52Super fijn om vertrouwen te krijgen.
Super nice to gain confidence.
4:57En ja, soms is er een wachtlijst. And yes, sometimes there's a waiting list.
5:00Wachtlijst betekent dat je niet meteen kan starten. A waiting list means you can't start right away.
5:03Je moet eerst even wachten tot er plek is.
You have to wait a bit until there's a spot.
So sign up early and ask if you can get materials at home in the meantime.
By the way, on the street or at work, you sometimes hear a lot of English.
That's called anglicization, meaning people are using more and more English.
It's not bad or anything, but if you want to practice, just say that you want to try Dutch.
5:29Even een mini-samenvatting met een quiz, ja?
Just a mini-summary with a quiz, okay?
What do you say if someone immediately switches to English?
5:36Kom, zeg het hardop.
Come on, say it out loud.
And if someone speaks too fast, you can say: could you speak a bit slower?
Oh yes, a language buddy means a person who practices with you, for free and in a friendly way.
Let's continue with some more tips for the second half.
6:00Kies kleine doelen, niet te groot.
Set small goals, not too big.
6:02Bijvoorbeeld, vandaag leer ik drie zinnen voor de bakker.
For example, today I'm learning three sentences for the baker.
Or I'm putting stickers on five things at home with the Dutch word.
Yes, stick notes on the door, table, mirror, fridge.
6:16Dan zeg je elke dag: dit is de deur, dit is de tafel.
Then you say every day: this is the door, this is the table.
And pay a little attention to the words de and het, because those can be tricky.
If you’re unsure between this and these, do a little trick.
6:33Bij het woorden zeg je dit: dit huis.
With the words, you say this: this house.
6:37Bij de woorden zeg je deze: deze tafel.
With the words, you say these: these tables.
It's not a perfect rule, but it helps quite well.
Shall we do a short role play again, but now about a language course?
6:50Ik bel zogenaamd een taalschool.
I'll pretend to call a language school.
6:52Jij bent de medewerker, oké?
You’re the employee, okay?
I want to know if there’s space and what it costs.
7:00Kom maar door.
Come on in.
7:02Ik neem op: goedemiddag, met de taalschool.
I’m answering: good afternoon, this is the language school.
7:06Waarmee kan ik u helpen?
How can I help you?
I say: hello, I'm looking for a Dutch course for beginners.
7:13Is er plek of is er een wachtlijst? Is there space, or is there a waiting list?
7:17Rustig en duidelijk, hè?
Calm and clear, right?
7:18Ik antwoord.
I respond.
There's currently a waiting list of about two weeks.
We have groups on Monday and Wednesday, two evenings a week.
7:28Het kost 50 euro per maand.
It costs 50 euros per month.
7:32Dan zeg ik: dank u.
Then I say: thank you.
7:34En welk niveau is het?
And what level is it?
And can I register today on the website?
7:42Ik: ja, het is niveau A1.
I: yes, it's level A1.
You can register today on our language school's website.
If you have any questions, feel free to call again.
7:56En dan sluit ik af.
And then I wrap up.
7:57Fijne dag!
Have a nice day!
7:59Kijk, klaar.
Look, done.
Now you have sentences for calling, asking about a waiting list, and checking the level.
8:06Super bruikbaar, toch?
Super useful, right?
And just a reminder about pronunciation, because that really helps.
Record yourself with your phone while you talk.
Listen back and compare it to a short video or a song.
8:23Dat klinkt eng, maar je leert snel.
That sounds scary, but you learn quickly.
8:26En maak het leuk.
And make it fun.
Cook a Dutch recipe and read the steps out loud.
8:32Speel een spel met jezelf.
Play a game with yourself.
8:35Vandaag gebruik ik het woord misschien vijf keer.
Today, I’m using the word maybe five times.
This keeps it light and you remember it better.
At work or study, if colleagues switch to English, just say:
8:47Zullen we dit eerst even in het Nederlands proberen?
And if it really gets too hard, yes, you can switch briefly to English.
8:54Maar begin Nederlands, dat helpt.
But start in Dutch, that helps.
8:57Ja, ik zeg er vaak bij:
Yes, I often add:
If I'm stuck, I’ll ask in English.
9:04Mensen vinden dat prima.
People are fine with that.
9:06En heel vaak lukt het gewoon in het Nederlands, echt waar.
And very often, it just works in Dutch, really.
9:11Nog een kleine waarschuwing, maar lief bedoeld.
Just a small warning, but in a friendly way.
Some Dutch people get a bit tired of a really hard K for the G,
so practice that soft throat sound, especially with good and day.
9:22Het klinkt meteen natuurlijker.
It sounds way more natural right away.
9:24En maak grapjes, dat helpt spanning weg.
And joke around, it helps ease the tension.
For example, say: I’m still a bit slow, but I’ll get there.
9:34Mensen lachen en ze helpen je.
People laugh and they help you.
9:37Humor opent deuren, ja toch?
Humor opens doors, right?
If you can't afford a course, that’s okay too.
9:45De bibliotheek heeft vaak gratis taalkringen.
The library often has free language circles.
9:48Je kunt ook een ruil doen.
You can also do an exchange.
You help someone with your language and that person helps you with Dutch.
9:54Win-win, hoor.
It's a win-win, you know.
And there are simple podcasts and short news items with easy language.
10:02Luister elke dag tien minuten.
Listen for ten minutes every day.
Not three hours in one day and then nothing more, but a little every day.
10:10Dat is gewoon beter voor je hoofd.
That’s just better for your brain.
10:14O, nog een minitip voor in de winkel.
Oh, here's another mini tip for the store.
10:16Begin met een vaste zin: hallo, ik zoek.
Start with a fixed phrase: hello, I’m looking for.
10:21En dan het woord.
And then the word.
10:23Bijvoorbeeld: hallo, ik zoek voor korenbrood.
For example: hello, I’m looking for bread rolls.
And if you can't find it: where is it?
10:31Heel eenvoudig en effectief.
Very simple and effective.
10:33Samenvatten tot nu toe.
Summarizing so far.
Talk, make mistakes, ask to speak more slowly, use children's books, practice the G, and find a language buddy or group.
10:58Dat is het hart van sneller leren.
That’s the heart of learning faster.
11:01Niet te veel plannen, gewoon doen.
Don't plan too much, just do it.
11:04En vergeet niet: stel vragen.
And don't forget: ask questions.
People love to explain what something is called.
11:11Hoe heet dit in het Nederlands?
What is this called in Dutch?
11:13Of zeg je dit zo goed?
Or do you say it like this?
11:16Met zulke vragen leer je elke dag iets nieuws.
With such questions, you learn something new every day.
11:19Oké, even een check voor jou die luistert.
Okay, a little check for you listening.
11:24Wat betekent wachtlijst ook alweer? What does waiting list mean again?
11:27Precies, dat je moet wachten tot er plek is.
Exactly, that you have to wait until there is space.
And what do you say to stay in Dutch?
11:34Juist, mag ik het in het Nederlands proberen?
Right, can I try it in Dutch?
11:39Laatste tip van mij: kies een mini-thema per week.
My last tip: choose a mini-theme each week.
11:43Week 1, de supermarkt.
Week 1, the supermarket.
11:46Week 2, de huisarts.
Week 2, the doctor.
Then you learn words in context, and they stick much better.
And promise yourself a reward after every little practice.
11:59Een koekje, een serieaflevering, wat dan ook.
A cookie, an episode of a series, whatever.
12:03Je brein denkt dan: Nederlands is leuk.
Your brain will think: Dutch is fun.
12:06Klinkt simpel, werkt wel.
Sounds simple, but it works.
12:08Oké, een vraag aan jou: jij, jij.
Okay, a question for you: you, you.
What do you say exactly when someone switches to English immediately?
Write your sentence in the comments so others can learn from you too.
12:20We gaan afsluiten.
We're going to wrap up.
12:24Als je dit nuttig vond, like even de aflevering en abonneer je, dan mis je geen tips.
If you found this useful, please like the episode and subscribe so you don't miss any tips.
And share it with a friend who just moved to the Netherlands.
12:32Dank je wel voor het luisteren.
Thank you for listening.
12:36En echt, je kunt dit.
And really, you can do this.
Speak one sentence in Dutch today, just do it.
12:42Tot de volgende keer.
Until next time.
