Did you know that many people pay too much at the pharmacy because they don't ask for a cheaper brand?
0:06
I read that a lot of people do this, probably about 60 percent. Crazy, right?
0:11
Total.
Totally. And another thing, many come without a prescription or the prescription isn't covered by insurance.
0:18
Dann heißt es plötzlich Z zahlen. Autsch, das tut weh im Portemonnaie.
Then all of a sudden, it's pay out of pocket. Ouch, that hurts the wallet.
0:21
And then there's the E-prescription, the digital prescription. For some, it's great, for others just confusing: app, card, PIN, uh, what's the deal? Today, we're going to talk about it calmly.
0:34
Hi and welcome to our little coffee talk. I'm Julia, I've got my mug here and I'm really excited that you're back with us.
0:42
Und ich bin Tim. Schön, dass ihr zuhört. Heute geht's ums Medikamente abholen in der Apotheke. Was braucht man? Was sagt man? Und wie vermeidet man teure Überraschungen?
And I'm Tim. Great to have you listening. Today we're talking about picking up medications at the pharmacy. What do you need? What do you say? And how do you avoid expensive surprises?
0:53
Also fangen wir mal ganz basic an. Was braucht man denn wirklich? Rezept, klar.
So let's start from the basics. What do you really need? A prescription, of course. A prescription is the paper or digital code from the doctor that includes the medication name.
1:02
Genau.
Exactly. And often you also need the card from your health insurance, the electronic health card. For some strong medications, they also ask for ID, the identification document with a photo. Better safe than sorry.
1:17
Ja, und beim E-Rezept, also beim digitalen Rezept, gibt's manchmal zwei Wege.
Yes, and with the E-prescription, the digital prescription, there are sometimes two paths. Either you have an app from the insurance or you have a paper printout with a code. Both are possible.
1:28
Let me put it simply. An E-prescription means the prescription is no longer on pink paper but stored digitally. You pick it up with your app or your card. If you're unsure, just call the pharmacy beforehand.
1:42
Genau.
Exactly. Calling is really smart. Many make the mistake of not checking in advance if the medication is available. Then you find out they need to order it. Come back later. It's annoying, right?
1:52
Yeah, totally. I experienced that recently. I showed up at noon, in a big hurry. And they said, not before tonight or tomorrow morning. Since then, I call ahead or text. Well, I just ask about the stock.
2:07
A big point is also insurance or self-pay. So, is the insurance paying, or do you have to pay everything yourself? You can often see this in the app, or just ask briefly at the practice or in the pharmacy.
2:18
I once had an uncomfortable situation. I thought it was going through insurance. And then the pharmacy said, no, that's private, so self-paying. The price was much higher than expected. I was really surprised.
2:31
Panik pur. Tipp: Frag vorher nach dem Preis. Einfach sagen: Was kostet das ungefähr?
Oh man, I know that from a friend. She was standing there with little cash, no card, and it was more expensive than expected. Total panic. Tip: Ask about the price first. Just say: How much does it cost roughly?
2:41
And another tip that's simple but important: Always ask for a cheaper alternative. For instance: Is there another brand with the same active ingredient?
2:57
Active ingredient means the important part of the medication that helps.
3:01
Yes, exactly. And many don’t know that. There’s often an expensive and a cheap option, but with the same effect. Some pharmacies mention this on their own, others don't. So ask actively, kindly, but clearly.
3:13
By the way, this is a discussion I often see. Some say pharmacies should always mention if there's a cheaper option. Others say quality and advice are important too, not just the price. I think both matter.
3:25
I really value advice. Advice means having a short conversation with the pharmacist about how to take the medication and what to watch out for. But yes, price transparency is important too.
3:37
Then there's the issue of over-the-counter medications. Many think: Oh, I can get that without a prescription. And then they find out they can’t. It’s not embarrassing, but it’s inconvenient and costs time.
3:48
Yes, better to check online or call beforehand. And if it’s available over-the-counter, still ask what dosage is sensible. Dosage means how much and how often you take something. That's important for it to work well.
4:01
I read a story online that was really, hmm, a bit embarrassing. A person went to pick up a new hormone medication. The older pharmacist asked very personal questions: What are the symptoms, how long, and so on. The person felt really uncomfortable.
4:16
Also: Bitte etwas privater sprechen.
Oh dear. I understand both sides. The pharmacist wants to help and be sure. But yes, you don’t want to share everything in front of other people. Tip: You can quietly say: Can we have a moment of discretion? So: Please speak a bit more privately.
4:29
Good line, I'll remember that. Or you say: Could we discuss this briefly aside? That usually works. Most pharmacies have a small consultation area that’s a bit quieter.
4:39
Voller Stress.
There was also a story about the E-prescription and the app. The person went to the pharmacy thinking everything was ready. But the pharmacy said: Please install and activate the app first. That took a while. Total stress.
4:52
Spart Nerven.
Yes, that's exactly the point. Digital is good, but you have to know how. My tip: Test everything at home before your first E-prescription, open it, check the login, and see if the prescription is there. It saves nerves.
5:04
And if you don’t have a smartphone, that’s okay too. Just get a printout with a code from the doctor. Or bring your health card. The pharmacy can often read it and see your prescription.
5:15
There's also the issue that sometimes the pharmacy won’t give you the medication until there’s a short consultation. Some find that annoying. I think it protects us. It helps you notice if there are any interactions, meaning if two medications don't work well together.
5:29
Genau.
Exactly. And if you're short on time, just say honestly: I'm in a hurry. Can we keep it brief? Many will then be super efficient. But you should still hear important info, like side effects, things that might be unpleasant.
5:41
Another mistake many make: They don’t bring any documents. For stronger medications, you sometimes need ID. Or if someone else is picking up for you, that person needs a power of attorney. Power of attorney means a note with your permission and signature.
5:57
Yes, many forget that. I write that down on a small note: Prescription, card, ID, cash or card for payment. It really helps, sounds simple, but it saves stress.
6:09
Another point about the price: Ask about the co-payment. Co-payment is the small amount you have to pay even with insurance. Sometimes it’s 5 to 10 euros, sometimes less, sometimes more. Just ask, so there are no surprises.
6:24
And if something feels too expensive, feel free to say so. Ask: Is there a cheaper alternative with the same active ingredient? Or can I take a smaller package?
6:33
A smaller package is sometimes cheaper and enough to start with.
6:36
Let me give you a little example of how I speak. I’d say: Good day, I’d like to pick up my prescription under the name Tim Müller. Is that covered by insurance or do I have to pay myself? And is there maybe a cheaper brand with the same active ingredient?
6:50
Sehr gut.
Very good. And I like to ask: Can you briefly tell me how to take this? Like before meals, after meals? And are there typical side effects I should watch out for? Short and friendly, that usually works.
7:02
If the medication isn't there, I say: Can you please order it? When can I pick it up? Or is there another pharmacy nearby that has it today? That way you have a clear solution.
7:14
Genau.
Exactly. And sometimes pharmacies also deliver to your home, especially if you're sick. Just ask: Is there a delivery? Or can someone pick it up for me later? With power of attorney, that works well.
7:26
Timing is an issue too. Lunchtime and after work are often busy. If you can, go in the morning, it's usually quieter then. Saturdays can also be busy, depending on the area.
7:36
Stimmt.
That's true. And here's a little tip: Write the name of the medication in large, legible letters on a note or in your phone. Some names are complicated. That way you don’t have to spell it out three times, haha.
7:47
Ja?
Yes? Or you could say first: I'm not exactly sure how to pronounce that. No problem, they know that. And if you stumble, just stay cool. People at the pharmacy are used to it.
8:00
Was sagst du zur Diskussion über Preise in Apotheken? Manche finden die Preise intransparent. Ich verstehe das. Ich wünsche mir oft, sie würden sofort sagen: Es gibt Optionen, also A teuer und B günstiger.
What do you think about the discussion about prices at pharmacies? Some find the prices unclear. I understand that. I often wish they would just say right away: There are options, like A expensive and B cheaper.
8:11
Ja, sehe ich auch so. Gleichzeitig?
Yes, I see it that way too. At the same time? Hmm, they have a lot to explain and check. But honestly, a clear sentence helps: We have a cheaper alternative. Would you like that?
8:22
Das wäre super. Also, liebe Apotheken, mehr Transparenz bitte.
That would be great. So, dear pharmacies, more transparency please.
8:27
Haha, yes. And as customers, just ask. No stress, stay friendly. Often it really goes faster and cheaper without sacrificing quality.
8:36
We also need to briefly talk about self-payers. If you're paying for something yourself, don't hesitate to ask: Can I pay with a card or cash? And do you have a receipt?
8:44
Quittung heißt: Ein Beleg, den du später, falls nötig, zeigen kannst.
Receipt means: A document that you can show later if needed.
8:47
Oh, and one more thing. Some medications are available over-the-counter cheaper than similar products behind the counter. Ask specifically: Is there an over-the-counter version? Sometimes you’ll be surprised at how much you can save.
8:58
But important: Not everything can be sold without a prescription. Of course. If the pharmacy says no, there's a reason. Safety comes first.
9:09
Especially with strong or new medications, it's better to ask again.
9:12
One point about e-prescriptions? Some are unsure about PINs and such. Feel free to ask your health insurance for help. Or don't go alone the first time. Bring someone who knows about apps. It's not embarrassing at all.
9:24
Yes, and if the app is acting up, I just say: I'm having technical issues. Can we do it with the card? Usually, they'll find a way. The main thing is you get your medicine on time.
9:34
Speaking of on time: If you need a medication regularly, don't wait until the last day. I go about three or four days early. That gives you a buffer if something needs to be ordered.
9:44
Sehr gut.
Very good. And check the package at home calmly. Is the name correct? Is the strength right, meaning the dosage per tablet? If something seems off, go back immediately or call. Mistakes happen. It's human.
9:58
Another sentence I like to use: Are there any interactions with my other medications? So: do they get along? And if yes, great. If not, what can I do? The pharmacy had really good info.
10:09
Storytime Nummer 2. Also immer nach Optionen fragen.
Storytime number 2. Someone was totally shocked by the price because it was private. No money on hand, huge line, racing heart. In the end, the pharmacy sold a smaller pack. That worked out. So always ask about options.
10:29
Ergebnis? Warten und telefonieren. Tipp: Vorher kurz in der Praxis anrufen.
And story number 3: total misunderstanding. The person rushes into the pharmacy, thinking the prescription is there. But it hadn’t even been approved by the doctor yet. Result? Waiting and calling. Tip: Call the practice briefly beforehand.
10:42
Ich würde gern noch kleine Beispielsätze üben. Okay?
I'd like to practice small example sentences. Okay? To start: Hello? I’d like to pick up a prescription in the name of. Is that through health insurance or do I have to pay myself? And is there a cheaper alternative?
10:56
And my favorites: How do I take this? Before or after meals? Are there any side effects? And could we please discuss this briefly and discreetly? It helps if something makes you uncomfortable.
11:08
If you're picking up for someone: I'm picking up the medication for my mother; I have the authorization here. Is that enough? Then you show the prescription, card, and phone, and usually, that works.
11:18
If something's unclear, repeat it in your own words. For example: So, I take one tablet in the morning and one in the evening, right? This way, you remember better, and the pharmacy can correct you if something is wrong.
11:29
Richtig gut.
Really good. And if you're sick and can't go out, ask: Is there a delivery or courier service?
11:42
Einfach freundlich nachfragen.
Some pharmacies offer that, often on the same day. Just ask politely.
11:46
Lastly, the most important things again: Check if the prescription is there beforehand. Bring your card and ID, and if necessary, authorization. Ask about prices and alternatives. And use the consultation, short but clear.
11:58
Yes, and don't be afraid to ask questions. It's better to ask once more than to be uncertain at home. In the end, it saves time, money, and nerves.

Exactly. And let us know which sentences you use at the pharmacy or what stories you’ve experienced. We love reading that. Thanks for listening, and stay healthy.
12:29
Until next time, dear ones. And yes, remember: Breathe calmly, ask politely, and everything will be fine. Bye.

FAQ

What do I need to pick up prescription medicine in Germany?

Bring the prescription (paper or digital/e-prescription), your health insurance card or ID if required, and the exact name or message from your doctor so the pharmacist can find it.

How does the digital prescription (e-prescription) work at the pharmacy?

Your doctor sends a digital prescription or QR code to your app or as a code. Show that code or message at the counter and the pharmacist will retrieve and dispense the medicine.

What should I say at the pharmacy counter?

Quick phrases to show or say: 'I have a prescription' (show the paper or code) and 'I would like to pick up my medication.' Be ready to name the medicine or show the doctor's message.

What common mistakes should I avoid when collecting medicine?

Don’t forget your prescription or ID, don’t assume the exact brand will be available, check dosage and price, and ask about cheaper substitutes or side effects if unsure.

Can I use a foreign prescription or pay out of pocket?

Foreign prescriptions are often not accepted as-is; pharmacies may still dispense medicine if you pay out of pocket. Check with the pharmacy staff about coverage and available alternatives.
