German directness usually signals honesty, clarity and efficiency rather than rudeness; workplace and everyday examples show rules and tips to avoid misunderstandings.
0:00Hallo zusammen.
Hello everyone. Great to have you back. I'm Tim, and today we’re discussing an intriguing topic: why Germans are so direct and not rude.
Hey folks, I'm Julia. And yes, I think this topic is really important, especially for people who are new to Germany.
0:17Total.
Totally. Many say Germans are cold or unfriendly. But often it’s just direct, meaning honest and clear, without much fuss.
0:26Genau, direkt heißt, man sagt, was man meint. Und zwar ziemlich klar. Nicht böse, sondern ehrlich. Das kann am Anfang komisch wirken, ne?
Exactly, being direct means saying what you mean. Quite clearly. Not mean, but honest. It can seem strange at first, right?
I have a little story. A friend from Spain was in the office and received feedback from his boss. She just said: This isn't good. Please change that.
0:46Er dachte sofort, sie mag ihn nicht.
He immediately thought she didn't like him.
Fertig.
Oh yes, I know that feeling. Then, uh, later you realize, the person doesn’t mean it personally. They just want the task to get better. That's it.
0:57Genau. Feedback heißt übrigens Rückmeldung. Also jemand sagt dir, was gut ist und was du verbessern kannst.
Right. By the way, feedback means response. So, someone tells you what's good and what you can improve.
And it’s often very direct. Many people from other countries find this harsh at first. But later, many say it’s somehow relaxing, because you know where you stand.
1:12Ja, es spart Zeit, finde ich. Bei der Arbeit ist das super effizient. Effizient heißt schnell und ohne Umwege.
Yes, it saves time, I think. At work, this is super efficient. Efficient means fast and straightforward.
1:22Hm, und es gibt weniger Missverständnisse. Missverständnis heißt, man versteht etwas falsch.
Hmm, and there are fewer misunderstandings. A misunderstanding means you get something wrong. With direct language, this happens less because it’s just, uh, clear.
I have another example from everyday life. At the checkout in the supermarket, I once placed some bottles incorrectly. A woman said quite dryly: That doesn’t go there. At first, I thought, wow, that’s a bit harsh.
Yes, yes, and then you realize she’s actually helping. She’s showing you where it goes. No please, no smile perhaps, but the information is correct and useful.
1:50Richtig. In anderen Ländern würde man vielleicht sagen: Entschuldigung, könnten Sie vielleicht?
Correct. In other countries, one might say: Sorry, could you possibly? And in Germany, often the issue comes first: That doesn’t go there.
Also Inhalt vor Smalltalk.
And that's not meant to be rude. It's just, uh, the style. The issue is important, not so much the tone. So, content before small talk.
2:09Smalltalk. Gutes Wort.
Small talk. Good word. Small talk means briefly chatting about light topics, weather, weekend, stuff like that. In Germany, it exists, sure, but often less at work.
Was machen wir jetzt?
Yes, at work it’s often about: What’s the goal? What are we doing now? And then comes the direct question: When will this be done? Or is this okay?
Sometimes it sounds harsh because it’s short. Words like maybe or could you are often missing.
2:39Genau.
Exactly. And many find it really pleasant later. I've heard friends say: Wow, finally someone just says what’s going on, without games.
There are also regional differences, right? In Berlin, people are often very direct, almost dry. In the south, like in Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg, it sometimes sounds a bit softer.
2:59Stimmt.
True. In the north it’s often short and to the point. In the Rhineland, for example, there’s more humor and a bit of warmth, but people still clearly say what they mean.
So, why are Germans so direct? Many say honesty is important. When you’re honest, you show respect because you’re not wasting others' time.
3:19Ja, genau.
Yes, exactly. And clarity provides security. When I know what you want, I can act. There’s less guessing, you know?
3:28Jetzt mal konkret.
Now, let’s get specific. What can you do if direct words sound odd? My tip: First, take a deep breath and think: Okay, this is culture, not an attack.
3:38Sehr gut.
Very good. And if you're unsure, ask for clarification. For example: What exactly do you mean? Or: Is this meant as criticism? This makes it clear quickly.
Criticism by the way means saying what's not good. But it can be friendly and helpful. Not every criticism is negative against you as a person.
I have another little story. A colleague said to me: Julia, your text is too long. Shorten it. I first thought: Ugh. But then, uh, I cut it down and the text was really better.
4:10Ja. Und später bedankt man sich sogar. Man denkt: Danke für die klare Info. Das spart Zeit und ehrlich gesagt Nerven.
Yes. And later you even thank them. You think: Thanks for the clear information. It saves time and, to be honest, nerves.
4:18Man kann auch selbst ein bisschen direkter sprechen. So kleine Sätze helfen: Ich möchte das so. Oder: Ich sehe das anders. Das ist höflich und trotzdem klar.
You can also speak a bit more directly yourself. Short sentences help: I want it this way. Or: I see it differently. That’s polite and still clear.
4:27Oder: Das passt für mich nicht. Das ist super. Kurz, ehrlich, respektvoll.
Or: That doesn’t work for me. That’s great. Short, honest, respectful. No long stories, but the message is there.
If you’re afraid of sounding too harsh, add a little soft word. For example: I think that doesn’t fit. Or: Not ideal for me. That makes it friendly but still direct.
4:46Ein anderer Tipp: Erklär kurz deine Absicht. Sag: Ich will ehrlich sein, nicht unfreundlich. Oder: Ich sage es direkt, okay. Dann weiß die andere Person, was kommt.
Another tip: Briefly explain your intention. Say: I want to be honest, not rude. Or: I’m saying this directly, okay? Then the other person knows what’s coming.
Dann entsteht weniger Stress.
Yes, that really helps. That way the other person knows: It’s about the issue, not feelings. Then there’s less stress.
5:03Man kann auch üben, ne? Schreib dir Sätze auf. Ganz simpel. Zum Beispiel: Ich brauche mehr Zeit. Kannst du das genauer erklären? Das Ziel ist unklar für mich.
You can also practice, right? Write down sentences. Very simple. For example: I need more time. Can you explain that in more detail? The goal is unclear for me.
5:12Und auch positiv direkt sein. Sag: Das ist gut gelungen. Oder: Danke, das hilft mir sehr. Viele denken, direkt heißt nur hart. Aber direkt kann auch sehr nett sein.
And also be positively direct. Say: That’s well done. Or: Thank you, that helps me a lot. Many think direct means only harsh. But direct can also be very nice.
5:22Oh ja, das ist wichtig. Direkt und freundlich geht zusammen. Man sagt einfach klar, was man gut findet.
Oh yes, that’s important. Being direct and friendly can go together. You just clearly say what you like.
One more point. In German, many say sorry less in everyday life. You apologize of course when something serious happens. But you don’t say sorry for everything, you know?
5:39Ja, stimmt. Stattdessen sagt man direkt, was Sache ist: Ich komme zu spät. Oder: Ich habe den Bus verpasst. Kurz, klar, fertig.
Yes, that’s true. Instead, you just say what’s going on: I’m running late. Or: I missed the bus. Short, clear, done.
5:50Ein schönes Beispiel vom Bäcker. Die Verkäuferin sagt: Nächster. Das klingt vielleicht streng. Aber sie meint einfach: Wer ist dran? Es ist nicht böse, sondern kurz.
A nice example from the bakery. The salesperson says: Next. That might sound strict. But she simply means: Who's next? It’s not rude, just brief.
5:59Oder in der Bahn: Bitte nicht hier sitzen. Das ist direkt. In manchen Ländern würde man sagen: Könnten Sie vielleicht woanders? Hier kommt die Info zuerst.
Or on the train: Please don’t sit here. That’s direct. In some countries, one might say: Could you possibly sit elsewhere? Here, the information comes first.
6:08Ich finde das praktisch. Man weiß sofort, was man tun soll.
I find it practical. You immediately know what to do. No deep thinking, just acting, and that’s that.
6:15Aber klar, es gibt Grenzen. Direkt ist nicht schreien. Direkt ist nicht beleidigen. Direkt ist einfach ehrlich sprechen, mit Respekt.
But of course, there are limits. Being direct doesn't mean shouting. Being direct isn’t insulting. Being direct is just speaking honestly, with respect.
6:24Genau.
Exactly. And when someone is really rude, you notice. The tone is then aggressive. Direct language is firm, but calm.
6:31Wenn du unsicher bist, hör auf den Ton. Ist der ruhig? Dann ist es wohl einfach direkt. Ist der laut oder spöttisch? Dann ist es vielleicht unfreundlich.
If you’re unsure, listen to the tone. Is it calm? Then it’s probably just direct. Is it loud or mocking? Then it might be unfriendly.
And you can always ask for clarification. Do you mean this as help? Or is this your suggestion? Then it often becomes relaxed and the person explains.
At work, it also helps to share rules at the beginning. For example: We give feedback directly and concretely. Then the whole team knows.
I also like the word concrete. It means precise, clear, with examples. Not so general, but really to the point.
To the point, yes. That’s actually the idea. Not talking long around the bush. It means not talking long without saying anything.
Oh, that saying is good. Beating around the bush doesn’t make sense to many at first. It simply means not being direct.
I also believe that a direct culture makes friendships honest. When I tell you what I think, I trust you. That’s something beautiful.
I think so too. Many who move here first say: Ouch, this is tough. And after a few months, they say: Oh, this is actually quite nice.
Another tip for emails: Write clear subject lines and start with the most important part. For example: Change appointment. Wednesday at 2 PM is not possible. Then a short explanation.
7:53Ja, und kurze Sätze helfen. Kein Roman. Höflich bleiben, aber nicht so viele Füllwörter. Können wir den Termin verschieben? Ich schlage Donnerstag vor. Fertig.
Yes, and short sentences help. No novels. Be polite, but don’t use too many filler words. Can we reschedule? I suggest Thursday. Done.
If you need to say no, just say it. No, I can’t do that today. You can briefly offer an alternative: Tomorrow works. That's polite and clear.
Many fear saying no. But in Germany, a direct no is often okay. It saves time. And the other person knows exactly where they stand.
Denk lieber: Die Person gibt mir gerade Informationen. Nicht: Sie greift mich an.
And if someone is very direct with you, don’t take it personally right away. Instead, think: This person is giving me information. Not: They are attacking me.
8:31Super Punkt.
Great point. And if something bothers you, say it directly: The tone was too harsh for me. Or: Can you say it more kindly? This leads to a good conversation.
By the way, direct doesn’t mean without feeling. You can say: I’m disappointed because... That’s also direct, but very honest and personal.
Yes, that’s even strong. Because you’re talking about yourself, not about the other person. That makes it clear and fair.
8:56Okay.
Okay. Let’s briefly summarize. German directness often comes from values like honesty, clarity, and efficiency. It’s meant to help, not hurt.
9:07Genau.
Exactly. There are regional differences, but the idea remains: Say what you mean. And if you’re unsure, ask for clarification and stay calm.
9:15Praktische Sätze zum Mitnehmen: Ich brauche Hilfe. Ich bin anderer Meinung. Kannst du das genauer erklären? Das passt für mich nicht. Ganz einfache, klare Formulierungen.
Practical sentences to take away: I need help. I disagree. Can you explain that in more detail? That doesn’t work for me. Very simple, clear phrases.
9:26Und positiv nicht vergessen: Danke für das Feedback. Das hilft mir. Gute Idee. Direkt und freundlich geht super zusammen, wirklich.
And don’t forget the positive: Thank you for the feedback. That helps me. Good idea. Being direct and friendly goes really well together.
If you’re new in Germany, give it a try. Speak a bit clearer, shorter, and explain your intent. You’ll see, it gets easier.
And if a misunderstanding happens: Hey, no drama! Just say: I understood it differently or I meant it differently. It’s better already.
I think that was a good little journey through the topic. Direct but not rude. That’s the idea. And with practice, it feels completely normal.

Bleibt ehrlich, bleibt freundlich.

10:33Macht's gut, ihr Lieben. Und ja, denkt dran: Direkt ist okay. Wir hören uns nächste Woche wieder. Tschüss.
