So, let’s get started with the big topic of language blunders and how to, well, handle them nicely and casually.
1:03Erstmal kurz klären.
First, let’s clarify briefly.
A language blunder is a speaking mistake that’s often embarrassing.
1:11Und Missverständnis heißt, beide verstehen etwas Unterschiedliches, obwohl sie reden. And misunderstanding means both understand something different, even though they’re talking.
1:17Ich hatte mal so eine Szene im Sommer.
I had a scenario like that in the summer.
I wanted to say I’m hot, but I just blurted out.
1:31Ich bin heiß im Meeting.
I’m hot in the meeting.
1:34Alle haben kurz geschaut, dann gelacht.
Everyone looked shocked for a second, then laughed.
1:37Und ich so, äh, okay, wow.
And I was like, uh, okay, wow.
1:41Ja, lustig.
Yes, funny.
1:43Und die Rettung ist super simpel.
And the fix is super simple.
1:45Oh, ich meinte, mir ist heiß.
Oh, I meant I’m hot.
Then maybe add, sorry, my brain was on vacation for a moment.
1:51Einmal lächeln, fertig, weiterreden.
Just smile, done, keep talking.
1:55Genau, zwei goldene Sätze sind.
Exactly, there are two golden phrases.
1:58Ich hab mich versprochen.
I misspoke.
And what’s that called again? With those, you buy yourself time, and people are happy to help.
2:05Und du zeigst, dass du locker bleibst.
And you show that you’re staying cool.
2:09Lass uns schnell ein kleines Rollenspiel machen, ja?
Let’s quickly do a little role-play, okay?
You want to say you’re bored, and you accidentally say I'm boring.
2:20Ich reagiere nett und du rettest es.
I’ll respond nicely and you’ll fix it.
Uff, this presentation is so long, I’m boring.
Ah, wait, I misspoke, I’m bored.
2:36Danke fürs Verständnis, ich übe noch.
Thanks for understanding, I’m still practicing.
You named the mistake, corrected it, and didn’t apologize excessively.
2:46Ein kurzes, ich übe noch, wirkt sympathisch.
A short, I’m still practicing, comes off as friendly.
2:49Und alle wissen sofort, was du meinst.
And everyone immediately knows what you mean.
I also misunderstood minutes once, at my new job.
I thought it meant something like rules, but everyone meant the document from the meeting.
3:04Ich hab dann gesagt, oh, Missverständnis, ich dachte an Regeln. I then said, oh, misunderstanding, I was thinking of rules.
3:11Ich schreibe das Protokoll gern, kein Problem.
I’m happy to write the minutes, no problem.
Yes, and that’s strong because you explain the misunderstanding right away.
3:21So merkt niemand den Fehler, sondern deine Lösung.
This way, no one notices the mistake but your solution.
3:25Plus, du klingst hilfsbereit, nicht defensiv.

That's honest and safe.
4:12Noch ein paar fiese Stolpersteine.
Just a few nasty stumbling blocks.
4:14Bekommen heißt erhalten, nicht werden.
To receive means to get, not to become.
So, saying I get an email is right, but I get tired is wrong.
4:24Da sagst du besser, ich werde müde.
Instead, you should say, I’m getting tired.
4:27Solche kleinen Dinge machen oft die großen Pannen.
Such little things often cause big blunders.
4:32Und eventuell heißt vielleicht nicht auf jeden Fall. And maybe doesn’t mean definitely.
If you say, I might come, better plan for the other person to check again.
I think language in shared apartments can be tricky too.
4:54Ich hab mal zu meiner Mitbewohnerin gesagt, du musst heute abwaschen.
I once told my roommate, you have to do the dishes today.
5:00Sie war sofort sauer.
She got angry right away.
5:02Besser wäre gewesen, kannst du heute vielleicht abwaschen? It would’ve been better to say, could you maybe do the dishes today?
5:07Ich schaff's nicht, wäre super, gleiche Sache, andere Wirkung.
I can't manage it, that would be great, same thing, different effect.

And if you notice it’s tipping, just say so.

Sorry, that sounded too direct.
5:28Ich meinte das freundlich.
I meant it nicely.
5:30Zack, Spannung weg.
And just like that, the tension disappears.
5:31Und lach ruhig mal über dich.
And don’t hesitate to laugh at yourself.
5:35Ich sag dann oft so halb im Spaß.
I often say that half in jest.

And when both smile, the topic is almost settled.

7:32Genau, oder du fragst aktiv.
Exactly, or you ask actively.
Many also think they need to find the perfect joke to come across casually.
8:11Und benutze Spiegelsätze.
And use mirror sentences.
8:23Typischer Fehler noch.
Another typical mistake.
If you get confused, just say, sorry, prepositions are my weak spot.
