The first word is pharmacy, of course.

The place.

And the person who assists you is the pharmacist, okay.

They’re the ones who help you choose the right product.

And very importantly, prescription.

With a prescription means the doctor requests it in writing.

Without a prescription is something you can buy directly.

This is basic when you’re looking for medication.

And that’s exactly where the difference lies that many confuse: medicine and medication.

Medicine is like the field, the science, in general.

Medication is the product, what you buy, a box of pills, for example.

If you say medicine, well, they understand you, but it’s less precise.

Totally.

It happened to me with a student who always said he wanted the medicine.

The pharmacist understood him, yes, but asked, “Which medication exactly?”

So today we use the word medication for the product.

Let’s keep rolling with more essentials, okay?

Pills and capsules, which are forms of medication.

Pills are like flat tablets, and capsules are those with gelatin, like a tube.

Also syrup, which is sweet liquid, very common for coughs.

And creams, ointments, and gel.

MMM they sound similar, but look, cream is lighter, ointment is greasier, and gel is like, cooler and transparent.

At the pharmacy they ask you, “Do you want cream or ointment?”

And you already respond confidently.

For the eyes, we have eyedrops, which are drops for the eyes.

Also nasal spray, which is for a stuffy nose.

Better say, I have a prescription, or I want this prescription medicine.

In Spain, we say band-aids, in many countries in America, they say curitas.

In some places, it's called paracetamol and in others acetaminophen, but it's the same.
